There are many different reasons that motorcycle accidents happen. Even though they happen less often than car accidents, they are still much more popular for discussion, and people tend to like to blame the motorcyclist. In most cases, though, the cause of motorcycle accidents has very little to do with the motorcycle rider, and more to do with other drivers or elements.
Motorcycle accidents are much more dangerous and a hotter topic of discussion because there is no car, seatbelt, or airbag to protect motorcyclists like there are for those who are in vehicle accidents. Even those who wear helmets can still be injured or die in motorcycle accidents. Also, while many people think that motorcyclists speed too much and cause accidents, many motorcycle deaths actually occur at relatively low speeds, and at no fault of the rider.
It’s really sad, I think, when you consider how often the motorcyclist is blamed for accidents when they aren’t at fault, simply because of their reputation. It doesn’t matter if a car fails to see a motorcycle and hits it, or if a driver of a vehicle is drinking and driving when the accident occurs, because the fault is almost always placed on the motorcyclist.
People in cars have become too comfortable. They talk on the phone, they send text messages, they read the paper, put on makeup, and even eat while driving. All this leads to a lack of attention placed on the road, which makes them negligent and more likely to hit a motorcyclist because they don’t see the bike in their path.
Another cause of motorcycle accidents is the manufacturer’s defective products. There are often cases where a motorcycle malfunctions due to negligent production, and everyone once again blames the rider. This is why it is always a good reason to keep your bike tuned up and check it regularly for maintenance defects before you go riding, but even this can’t protect every defect-related accident from happening.
Motorcyclists have to go out of their way to be very attentive and defensive when they are riding because of all the distracted drivers out there today. If you want to be safer when you’re out on your bike, you’ll need to pay extra attention to other drivers and try to stay out of their way. It’s unfortunate that you have to invest the extra effort, when you aren’t the one at fault, but it is well worth it when you make it home safely at the end of the day.
